GREAT PROGRAM

Thank you Esri for putting on at least one program. I really wish you would make ArcGIS for OSX it would make university students lives easier! :)

Hard to tell how this app really works. I keep getting the message that it does not support individual accounts and I can get no further. It would be nice if it would support individual accounts.

OK, so I’m a GIS newbie. But good grief, how can you call something free if a login is required to make it work?! ESRI as usual is complex and unhelpful in everything it does. Or maybe I missed something. A star rating here doesn’t really apply; therefore I chose an ‘neutral’ 3 stars.

I was directed to the ESRI site from a county assessor website saying you can use this app in order to view their maps. No where on either site did it explain you needed an ESRI business account to use this app. What both sites did say was that it was FREE. What they should have said was that it is free IF you have a very expensive corporate account from ESRI. Now i am forced to search the open source options. Adobe has done the same thing. Almost all of the software is based upon subscriptions now. If the advertising had been straightforward, it would have saved me considerable time and effort.

I totall agree with the other reviwers, i dont mind signing up for the website however non of my maps that were created on ArcMap worked here…it doesn’t allow you to open a file from your directory… it is weird and seems like does not apply to individual users….

The US Census Bureau directed me to the web page for the "free" ArcGIS Explorer app (this one). Search for "esri arcgis explorer" and youll find the corresponding web page. I was then faced with a login ... so I created an account. Only AFTER that, upon trying to login to use this app, was I informed that "personal accounts are not supported." Very disappointed. I could "sign up for a 60 day free trial" but now I feel strung along.

Unless you have an existing corporate account with ESRI, don’t waste your time downloading Explorer because it is not “free” as advertised. Please consider the open-source and absolutely free GIS tool “QGIS" which is used by over 100,000 people globally. QGIS works across all platforms, (Unix, OS X and PC), at no cost to users. Robust installation and user’s guides and support a large variety of popular imaging formats. Disclaimer: I do not work for a GIS software development company, just a happy QGIS user who was curious about Explorer until I discovered their unscrupulous bait and switch marketing tactics first hand - ouch!

As others have said, this is not free. Not even close. I don’t see how ESRI benefits from having people download something that can’t be used. Do they get some sort of benefit from number of downloads? It makes no sense.

!?WHAT?! · 11 years ago

This software solution provides no real benefit. I already have ArcMap running on a virtual machine on my Mac so I don’t need it. Years ago you could share your maps in .shp format and they could be opened by the older version of Explorer. This version only works if you have a corporate account. That is a worthless solution for for my clients.
